Bewl Water Circuit

Walking around Bewl Water - 6th August

Yet another perfect walking day as you will see from the pictures. Trevor chose the walk because after last weeks epic this would be "flat; flat and flat". He reasoned that he had never seen a lake go uphill! But in practice this walk was far hillier that any of us thought and a couple of sections had some serious uphill pulls as you can see from the stats below.

Bewl Water is a reservoir made from damming a beautiful valley and it stores water from both the River Medway and the river Teise and then uses it to supply water to a large section of Kent and North Sussex. The resulting "lake" is a mass of inlets and land fingers as the natural valleys have filled with water. The  path around the edge is billed as 12.5 miles but we clocked up 13.2 miles because we had to make a slight detour to sup ale at the Bull Inn! Well it would have been rude to miss it. See links below.

We set out at 10-00am and decided to walk Anti-clockwise because this was the longer leg to our proposed lunch stop. We calculated that the 7.5 miles would take us until about 1-00pm a perfect time to take a break and in practice we had a pint in hand at exactly 1-00pm.

The walk had a great mix of woodland and open grass alongside the lake.

We didn't know what to expect from the Pub that was situated in the wonderfully named village of Three Leg Cross but on arrival we were amazed at what a little gem it was. Called "The Bull" it originated from 1385 and both Ale and food were excellent. See link below.

Refreshed but with somewhat leaden legs we set about the second section of the walk back to the Visitor centre and the car. The views continued to be excellent and with the sun on our backs we set up a reasonable pace for an afternoon walk.

Walking across the main dam before reaching the Visitor centre and a well earned cup of tea.
