Eden Valley

Penshurst to Edenbridge - Monday 23rd July

Hail the Sun-God "Trevor " has returned for our Monday walk
We parked up at Penshurst and set about following the Eden Valley way markers. This was a decent path and generally (with a few exceptions) relatively easy to follow without eyes being glued to the map. The first 4 miles was mostly through woodland as we passed Chiddingstone and carried on to Hever.

Came across this interesting sign in the middle of nowhere - so we registered Trevor just for good luck!

The path emerged at Hever Church and we took a few mins break to go inside. The church originates from 1115 but is mostly 14th Century.

Hever Church and the tomb of Ann Boleyn's father who once owned Hever Castle before his errant daughter lost her head for Henry V111. Regrettably it was too early to stop for a pint at the Henry V111 pub next door.

Pressing on the path tended more to open grassland from here as we zig-zagged across fields and railways lines on our way to Edenbridge. A couple of times we lost the path through farmer's planting crops right across the path but generally we managed to find our way without much of a detour.

The run into Edenbridge was particularly nice through open grassland with the river Eden visible from time to time.

The path as we approached Edenbridge and below the wonderful open vista on this section of the walk.

Very quickly we spotted Edenbridge Church in the distance because it was now close to 1-00pm and we all know what sits next to a Church!

Edenbridge church and below the hostelry that provided us liquids and vitals.

It was called the "King & Queen" and there was much discussion amongst the three of us about who was the King and who was the Queen!

After refreshment we carried on following the river Eden out of the town for about another 1.5 miles since we had a couple of hours to wait for the bus back. This section was also very pretty with the path following the river and at one point crossing a private airstrip with signs to "watch out for planes landing"

All in all this was a very pleasant walk in lovely sunshine.
